We’re aiming it at ORDINARY web designers, doing websites for clients .. not the lucky few who work at Facebook or Yahoo!
As such it’ll be:
Affordable (We’re aiming for the ticket to cost under £100).
Relevant (We’re trying to make the conference 80% practical, useful knowledge .. 20% inspiration and future technologies) – you should go back to work the next day with lots of things you can actually use, but also be fired up about possibilities.
Balanced. There will be technology in there. Design in there. Business in there. Etc. It’s going to have a spread of content.
Easy to get to by public transport. We’re starting later in the day to allow people to come on the day by public transport from a reasonable distance (11am) .. and we’re offering an incentive to come by public transport (a free lunch). Eden has a free bus from St. Austell station and have very good transport links / is well sign posted.
Green. We’re going to try to make the conference as green as possible .. which is why we’re keen for people to come by public transport. We’ll be keeping unnecessary paper to a minimum .. printing “sustainably” etc etc. and making sure that sponsors hand out good freebies .. not marketing material that will be dumped straight afterwards.
The price of the ticket will include entry to Eden on the day, which you can explore in breaks and before the conference.
We want to encourage freelancers and students to come .. as well as people who work for larger companies.
We’ve already got Paul Boag and Jeremy Keith provisionally lined up as speakers. We’ll probably have 1 more “big name” speaker and then the other slots will be opened up to “new talent” .. eg people who have something to say .. but aren’t part of the “usual” conference circuit.
Also we’ll be holding a series of “picnics” in the grounds at Eden, during the breaks. These will be 10-15 minute sessions / workshops, which will be run by conference attendees. Much closer to the event we will be asking attendees themselves to suggest ideas for, and then run, these smaller sessions. They are inspired by the Mircoformats picnic Jeremy Keith organised at d.Construct a few years ago. They will be held in semi-public (and weather permitting) outdoor spaces so that other visitors to the Eden that day may stop for a few minutes and listen in to the discussions.
We’re aiming to hold the after party at Eden, and tickets are going to be made available to this separately, for people who just want to do the networking / get drunk. It should be an awesome event .. and we’ll make sure the music isn’t too loud, so you can chat!
It’ll be held on a Friday, so you don’t lose an entire week by attending.
We’ll also get deals at local B and Bs and hotels for conference attendees, to keep the cost down.
*Why Bamboo Juice?
Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on the planet (we heard). It’s also a lovely green material that can be used for everything from paper to scaffolding from furniture to jet engines (OK, so we lied about the last one).
The Web is the fastest growing industry on the planet (probably) .. it’s also go the capacity to make the world a much better, greener place.
We .. the web designers .. are the juice that powers the Web. The Bamboo Juice.
